Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for everyone in the Armed Forces community, and as an employer of Service Leavers and veterans, EDSB is proud to celebrate the day.

As a business we want to recognise the hard work, dedication and efforts of those that keep us safe in the UK, and across the world. This extends from serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets.

We are committed to employing Service Leavers and helping those that leave the military, transition into a new career in civilian life. This year we have had, and are due to welcome, Service Leavers into our Install team, our Engineer Attendance team, our Service team and our Passive Fire team. You can hear some of their stories here:

Ben Hague, Acting Engineer Co Ordinator Team Leader

“My name is Ben Hague. I was a Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards and spent 7 years in her Majesty’s service until my medical discharge.

Since joining EDSB, I have seen how committed they are to Service Leavers in a multitude of ways. They genuinely see a way to give Service Leavers a good career in civvy street by taking the transferable skills that we don’t think we have, and turning them to both ours and EDSB’s advantage. The recent JobOppO event resulted in EDSB organising a recruitment day where 17 Service Leavers attended. EDSB is also putting together a tailor made apprenticeship programme centred around Service Leavers/veterans which will enable them to join the Fire & Security industry as Engineers with a fast track route to qualification. EDSB is working closely with JobOppO to attend more events and we will be appearing on a podcast in the near future to highlight the roles we are looking to recruit for and also what it is like to be a member of the team.

My biggest advice to Service Leavers looking to join EDSB, is don’t hesitate. This is the first time where I have actually looked forward to starting work on a morning. I genuinely enjoy it whether it has been a hectic day or not, I go home feeling happy and satisfied. Since leaving the Forces I have struggled massively and was constantly searching for somewhere to replicate the way I felt about my career in the Army and I know I have found it here. Their culture is just what I need, and I know that things like the opportunities for progression and money will come here and there’s nowhere else I want that to happen. If anyone does want to take the step and would like a chat about this then I am happy to give just as honest an opinion over a coffee any time, mine is a flat white with brown sugar please.”

Our newest member Morgan Johnston, Install Engineer

“My name is Morgan Johnston and I joined the Army in 2018. Whilst serving I was deployed to North Macedonia and I also did an operational tour of Iraq in March 2022.

I decided to leave the Army in October 2022 and was out to find a new beginning, but I was adamant on making sure it was the correct choice for me. I met with EDSB on their open day for fellow service leavers and I instantly had a good feeling and was made to feel at ease. Throughout the whole resettlement period of leaving the Army not once did anyone from EDSB put any pressure on me with dates of employment or deadlines, they worked with me making it a stress-free process.

Since starting at EDSB I've been made to feel at home, I am grateful to have this opportunity where I've been constantly supported throughout and can't wait to now work my way up learning my trade.

I'm proud to work for this company and even more so that I know they have also really bought into helping and supporting fellow service leavers into potential employment in various different roles."

As a growing business, we have opportunities across all teams. We would love to help more Service Leavers transition out
of the Forces and into a career at EDSB, simply email edsbcareers@edsb.co.uk

We hope you will join us in saying a huge thank you to our Armed Forces and the men and women who have served our
nation #armedforcesday

In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day on the 23rd of June 2023, we would like to give special recognition to one employee in particular, Ellie-May Harrison. As this year's theme is #MakeSafetySeen, we are proud to share Ellie-May's
journey with EDSB.

Ellie-May joined EDSB in May 2022 after spending a period of work experience with us via the Trainee Programme from Skills
for Security, who are our apprenticeship providers. This scheme allows students to gain an insight into what it’s like to be a
Fire & Security engineer, and be better prepared to start an apprenticeship. After impressing on her work placement, Ellie
May accepted a permanent role with us and is currently studying for the Level 3 NVQ in Fire, Emergency and Security Systems.
This is a three year course and she is already well on the way to completing year one!

Ellie-May joined the Midlands team and shadows our senior engineers, carrying out a range of works throughout the
Midlands. She is mentored by our Midlands Team Leader, Malcolm Allen. Working closely with Malcolm, Ellie-May has been
able to learn from his wealth of experience and expertise in Fire & Security.

"Working at EDSB has been an incredible journey, filled with opportunities to learn and grow in the field of Fire & Security. Being a woman in engineering has its challenges, but it also presents a unique opportunity to break barriers and redefine what is possible. I want to encourage other women to pursue their dreams and challenge the stereotypes that persist in our society.

At EDSB, I have been fortunate to work with a supportive and inclusive team that values diversity. They have fostered an environment where my ideas are heard and respected, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to projects. The practical experience and knowledge I have gained has been invaluable, and I am grateful for the mentorship and guidance I have received along the way.

Every day I wake up excited to face new challenges and embrace the ever-evolving world of Fire & Security. The work I do has a real impact on people's safety and well-being, and that is extremely fulfilling.

I am proud to be an engineering apprentice, proud to be a woman in this field, and proud to be part of EDSB."

– Ellie-May Harrison

Malcolm Allen had this to say, “Ellie-May has been ‘in the firm’ for a full 12 months now. She joined us on work experience for a period of three weeks, which enabled her to understand what the role of a Fire & Security engineer looks like, and also gave her a chance to do some practical work. Having moved into a permanent role with EDSB, she is now a proven success with our clients.

Ellie-May is always willing to get involved and is always writing notes and taking photos. This in turn helps her evidence her work, which is a key part of her apprenticeship. As well the practical on site work, she attends college every eight weeks for classroom sessions and hands on learning.

I am very proud to know Ellie-May and it’s a particularly satisfying part of my role, to see her grow from doing a period of work experience to becoming a Trainee Engineer, and on her way to becoming fully qualified.”

Ellie-May’s journey serves as an example to all aspiring engineers, particularly women, of the incredible contributions they can make in the field of engineering and the importance of promoting a strong safety culture in all projects.

Richard Branson once said, “Customers do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they’ll take care of your customers.”

At EDSB we know how important employee engagement is, from listening to what our employees want, to showcasing our reputation of being culturally progressive within our industry.  The last few years and the effects of the pandemic have seen huge changes in workplaces across the globe, so we decided this year we would put structure to employee engagement and start to measure our score.

We ran an employee survey at the start of the year which explored areas such as how people felt about their team, their manager, their personal growth, well-being and leadership within the company. By doing this, we were able to understand just how much our values, culture and ways of working resonate with our people, and what we can learn from the process.  The survey was run by a third-party research company, so all answers, whilst broken down by team, were personally anonymous.  As a business we listen, so it’s important that we get to hear all thoughts, whether constructive or positive.

88% of people completed the survey and we were not only delighted with the level of response, but also the quality and quantity of the feedback.  Rather than it being just a tick-box exercise, we opened it up so that people could contribute free text comments, suggestions and ideas.  From this, we got some fascinating insights into all areas of the business.

Our positives include a wealth of comments on our people and teamwork and how, when you join EDSB, you join the EDSB family.  As a growing business, we also learnt that people enjoy feeling they have good job security and appreciate that there are opportunities for everyone to develop their careers.  Our levels of well-being and overall support scored highly, emphasising our #oneteam approach. And our culture also scored well, with appreciation for EDSB’s forward thinking and modern people practices being recognised.

We realise that engagement levels will fluctuate year on year, so it’s important to look at factors outside of the questions, such as length of service, the teams people work in and location throughout the UK, to see what works well and where we can develop.

And being totally transparent – what can we improve?  Well, recruiting more people, having bigger offices and the chance to get together more, were requests which will be delivered over the coming months.

The results of our survey and the importance we place on employee engagement went on to shape the theme of our Annual Conference – EDSB People. We took the findings further and took the opportunity to ask for more feedback so everyone can play their part in shaping how EDSB looks in the future.

And our scores?  According to Gallup, just 32% of employees are engaged with their business.

EDSB has an engagement score of 94%.

We could not be more proud.

Finally, going back to those words from Richard Branson … we don’t have a hierarchy of who is most important, as we are nothing without either our clients or our people.  However, we do know that by growing and developing a team that is committed, engaged and dedicated to delivering the highest possible service to our clients, it’s a win-win situation all round.

EDSB Compliance Solutions is pleased to share the key highlights from this year's successful Business Conference which we held last month. The theme of this year’s Conference was ‘Our People’ and we were delighted to share not only our business plans for the year ahead, but also the successes and achievements of our team. It was a fantastic event and we were delighted to get the team together over the three days.

EDSB Compliance Solutions are extremely proud to have been able to donate their services to this year’s DIY SOS – The Big Build for BBC Children in Need which took place in Leeds in the autumn and aired last night on BBC1.

Not only did we feel privileged to be involved in the project by installing compliant Fire Alarm and CCTV Systems, we feel honoured to have been able to make a difference to the fantastic local charity, the Getaway Girls, one of BBC Children in Need’s longest running charities.

Great work from the EDSB team – Jason Bunyan, Asim Hussain, Andy Kerfoot, Joseph Fletcher who installed the systems and Nathan Best, Head of Design, who designed both systems and liaised with the team on site.

Also a big thank you to our Procurement team who were able to twist a few arms and obtain the kit needed for the project from our valued suppliers, Videcon, EU Fire, Kentec and LEW.  Thank you for your generosity and contribution to this amazing charity.

Well done to everyone involved in the project and who represented EDSB!

EDSB Compliance Solutions are proud to sponsor Kelfield Cricket Club. They are represented by our very own Passive Fire Designer, Ryan Lorryman, who has been a major part of this thriving team for the several years. We were very keen to support Ryan and his local club after they won their local league last year and we were delighted to see them win back to back leagues this year, a truly incredible feat!

Club chairman Ken Lawson explains more about who they are and what they have achieved.
“In 2021 we won the York Vale Division 1, which gave us the opportunity to apply to the Yorkshire Premier League North.
We were successfully accepted once we had upgraded our facilities, which included new electrics, a separate score box, refurbishing the pavilion and some other small changes. Although our expectations were to finish mid table, we found ourselves leading the Division after only 3 games and thanks to a lot of hard work and commitment from the officials, ground staff & especially players, we managed to keep the top spot! Although it came down to our last game which we won to secure the title.”

As well as winning the league, Kelfield CC also had an incredible cup run, beating several teams from higher Divisions, eventually finishing runners up to Hull Strikers.

Team Stats:
Gary Moore 1030 runs in both league and Cup - second overall highest run scorer in the division
Craig Lawson 713 runs in both League and Cup
Neil Atkinson 50 Years playing for Kelfield CC and still playing at 61!

“If we can have a successful season next year and win Division 3, moving up to Division 2 will bring more stipulations, including installing showers and having separate changing rooms for officials. This will take some time from our players to complete the works and funds from our much appreciated sponsors. On behalf of everybody at Kelfield CC I would like to send my thanks to the #OneTeam at EDSB for their kind sponsorship for the 2022 season.”

On behalf of EDSB we would like to congratulate Ryan, Ken and the rest of the team. We wish you every success
next year in Division 3, keep up the hard work!

EDSB Compliance Solutions are honoured to support another grassroots football team this year, Farsley Celtic Juniors FC. Not only are we delighted to have a new edition to our club sponsorship campaign, as a Leeds based business it is great to have another local team to cheer on this season.

EDSB are always on the lookout for worthy causes to support and when we were introduced to Farsley Celtic Juniors FC it was clear we had found just that. Team Manager Darren Goodall explains what this club is all about:

“Farsley Celtic Juniors FC have teams running from under 7’s right through to open age groups as well as a ladies team, aiming to be a club that is inclusive to all in the local area. My son began training with the club at age 5, which led to me taking on management of the team. We have a mix of girls and boys in the team which I manage, making up 25 players and we will be competing in two leagues this season with fixtures across West, South and North Yorkshire. Earlier in the year we were fortunate enough to play in a tournament at Elland Road where 8 of my starstruck and excited players graced the turf in front of hundreds of family and friends – an amazing experience, even for their Stoke City supporting manager!

Being a very close and well-structured club, we encourage as much interaction between all of the groups as we can with monthly manager meetings to ensure that quality and delivery remains consistent. We have created a list of core values, revolving around: respect, honesty, integrity, development, and passion, and they are intrinsic to how the whole club performs and operates.

Although this is all wonderful, where each age group requires huge support is via funding. The price of everything has risen sharply as we are all aware and that certainly includes kids’ football kits and hence, we needed to seek a suitable and generous partner to cover such costs. I was introduced to EDSB, liked what I saw in such a dynamic looking company who were thankfully open to meet with me and discuss how we could work together. Our principles and views were aligned and as a result, EDSB have been extremely generous in their support, culminating in a wonderful full kit and tracksuit top for 25 children, emblazoned with the company logo.

We are so thankful to EDSB for their donation and will be very proud to sport the company logo throughout the coming season and we are hopeful that we can impress you sufficiently so that you’ll want to partner us in future seasons. From 25 well kitted out and happy kids, not withstanding the coaches and parents, we genuinely thank EDSB for their generosity and support.”

On behalf of the OneTeam at EDSB we wish Darren and the team a fantastic season and we share their belief in maintaining core values. Farsley Celtic Juniors FC is a great cause which we are proud to support.

EDSB Compliance Solutions have supported many grassroots football teams over the past few years and this year is no different. We are very proud to partner with Holbeck Moor JFC, a local team to our Leeds office but also a completely new team. When Manager Chris Gamble contacted EDSB for our support, we were delighted and honoured to be part of something very exciting and different to the rest, it seemed a perfect match for our business.

EDSB have sponsored a number of Holbeck’s youth teams as well as their ‘Holbeck Huskies’ initiative to get children as young as 3 years old enjoying the game. It is their commitment to the local community which we find so endearing and we are sure they are destined for huge things in the future.

Chris explains to EDSB what it‘s all about:
“We officially launched Holbeck Moor JFC on the 2nd May 2022. We set up Holbeck Moor JFC for many reasons. Holbeck doesn’t have a junior football club, so children in the local area were having to travel further afield to play grassroots football. We wanted to bring a club to the area and really give back to the community. When we set up the club, we had 32 children, since then we now have 120 registered. Our club has grown beyond our wildest dreams. We have children from ages 3 to 14 currently. We initially had Under 9’s, Under 11’s, Under 13’s & Under 14’s teams, but recently we have added an Under 7’s & Under 10’s team. We also have our Holbeck Huskies, which is for our younger ones starting at age 3 until 6. As a club we want to continue to grow and continue to work with the local community. We have already offered free summer camp mornings, where some of our coaches have taken time out of their own working day to put on these sessions for the children, where we had over 40 children attend. One thing we also wanted to do, was not only give back to the local community, but to those who help others. That’s why we have formed partnerships with charities. Every age group has a charity partner, each charity partner is proudly shown on the sleeve of that team’s kit. As the club grows, so will our charity partners. We are excited for our future and are very thankful for the support from EDSB in believing in us and coming on this journey with us. As we always say, ‘Stronger Together’.”

Chris, from everyone at EDSB we can’t wait to see your teams grow over the next few years and we wish you every success developing local grassroots in Leeds.
